Heart CT Scan in Sparta Township & Newton, NJ

What Is a CT Scan?

A CT  Scan or computed tomography scan uses a series of x-rays to view specific areas of your body and create detailed images for detection of issues.

A quick and easy procedure, the CT scan will be done by you lying on your back with your body inside of the scanner. The machine will then rotate around you, taking a number of internal images. You will also have electrodes on your test that will monitor your heart’s activity. In some cases, a radioactive dye may be injected into your arm prior to the scan so that your doctor may view how your blood vessels are performing.

There is some exposure to radiation during the procedure, so it is important to disclose if you are pregnant with your doctor.

Why Should I Get a Heart CT Scan?

If your doctor has ordered a CT scan, you are most likely experiencing heart problems, or they may be looking for a certain condition like a birth defect, blood clot, tumor, or plaque. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, it’s important to see a doctor immediately:

  • Tightness in your chest
  • Sharp pain in your chest
  • Trouble breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat

CT scans will assist in revealing clear images of your heart and blood vessels so that your doctor can detect problems. There may be follow up tests such as a stress test or coronary catheterization.

Results and Recovery

The results of a CT scan are very quick, and can often be provided to your doctor that day. He will then review this information with you and give you follow up instructions.

Because there is no pain via the procedure, you will be able to leave directly after. If you have been injected with a dye, it will work its way out of your body naturally.
